The growing impetus for a different kind of leader

This top executive thought he was an amazing leader…his team thought the opposite… Read their story.

“Were you DRUNK when you made this ridiculous strategic plan?”
thunders an angry voice.

It belongs to a top executive, who has just spent the last 5 hours berating the team, replete with nasty jibes, insults and dismissive put downs. His behavior triggers a feeding frenzy among his leadership team, who are happy to pile on their insults.

The presenter, a well respected senior leader in the organization, looks miserable, mortified as he looks around at his talented team who are witnessing this in horror.

As you may have guessed, nothing constructive emerges from the days of misery, and the organization continues to hurtle towards disaster.

📌 But, here’s the interesting part.

This top executive thought he was an amazing leader!

He thought he was tough, but fair…when in reality people saw him as a bully.
He thought he was caring…when in reality he had a soul crushing impact on his people, and he played favorites.
He thought he was well respected…when in reality he was feared.
He thought people loved him, laughed at his jokes…when in reality they hated him.
The times he was the fun guy you could hang around, could never make up for the damage he caused.
There was a chasm between his intent and impact.
As leaders face unrelenting pressures and exponentially increasing expectations, it becomes difficult for them to operate. They can become unmoored, and inconsistent. They need an anchor, and the greatest anchor we have is our AUTHENTICITY.

THE GROWING IMPETUS FOR A DIFFERENT KIND OF LEADER

Work-life integration has become more of a norm, as the lines between work and life blurred. This has created the impetus to embrace the complexity of the whole human being at work, if we want people to be at their best and thrive. This requires a different leadership style, one that can meet the needs of diverse human beings in a team, and help each of them thrive.

HOW DO WE HELP LEADERS GET THERE?

Think of the best leaders you’ve ever worked with, you may not remember their best practices but you will remember who they were at their core.

It is the ‘why they did what they did’ that makes them the best, and differentiates them from the rest.
We need to shift our focus from leadership best practices to helping leaders do the inner work necessary in their growth journey as a leader
